Kaikoura Beach
A pebble beach and not many shells around although on occasions you can find "cats-eyes". The water is very cold due to the Kaikoura Trench lying offshore which is going 10 km or so down to the seafloor. Whales are loving it - and stop over during their migration for a rest and snack- so a thriving whale watch tourism venture has been built. Kaikoura also known for its yummy tasting Crayfish!! It is a bit steep and the sea-floor drops away quickly. No probelm getting into the water (if you can stand the cold) but getting out may be a bit difficult - getting a firm footing, especially if the surf wave action is strong.
